Located within the Misk City development in Riyadh, the ilmi Science Discovery & Innovation Center is conceived as an architectural landmark that translates scientific discovery and innovation into a highly expressive built form.
At the core of the project is a spherical facade envelope, engineered, fabricated, and installed by Metal Yapı using an advanced Single Layer Facade Steel Diagrid Node Member System. The project represents a highly complex application of free-form facade engineering, where geometry, structure, and architectural expression are resolved through a precisely coordinated steel system.
The facade structure is formed by a single-layer steel diagrid, specifically developed to accommodate the continuously changing curvature of the spherical geometry. A bespoke node member system, combining both organic-shaped and conventional steel nodes, enables seamless geometric transitions while ensuring structural efficiency, load continuity, and fabrication accuracy across the envelope.
Organic nodes are utilized in areas of high geometric variation to precisely respond to complex angles and spatial conditions, while conventional nodes are strategically deployed where repetition and rationalization allow for optimized production. This hybrid node strategy enhances constructability, reduces fabrication complexity, and supports tight dimensional tolerances throughout the structure.
The diagrid steel system supports an outer architectural layer composed of aluminum pyramid cladding panels and integrated architectural fins, generating depth, texture, and a dynamic play of light and shadow across the facade surface. The cladding system is fully coordinated with the underlying steel geometry, ensuring alignment, performance, and visual continuity.
From parametric design development and structural coordination to bespoke node fabrication and on-site assembly, Metal Yapı delivers the complete sphere facade engineering solution, demonstrating its expertise in complex geometry management, advanced steel fabrication, and high-precision facade installation.
