Located in the Belgian city of Mons, Gare de Mons is a new urban landmark, defined by the sculptural architecture of Santiago Calatrava LLC and supported by a 5,500-ton structural steel system engineered and delivered by Metal Yapı Engineering & Construction. Built directly above fully operational railway tracks, the station required a construction strategy far beyond conventional methods. To meet this challenge, Metal Yapı adapted the Incremental Launching Method (ILM), a technique typically used in large-span bridge construction, to the scale of a major railway station, representing a rare and innovative engineering application. Structural steel segments were assembled in a secure staging area adjacent to the tracks and incrementally pushed into their final position using hydraulic systems, achieving millimetric precision throughout the process. This approach enabled the completion of the structure without interrupting railway operations, ensuring maximum safety and continuous rail service. More than a transportation hub, Gare de Mons functions as an architectural bridge reconnecting the two halves of the city. Metal Yapı is proud to have engineered the structural backbone that brings Calatrava’s architectural vision to life through advanced construction methodology and precision steel engineering.
