The new Azerbaijan Central Bank Headquarters in Baku stands as a landmark project recognized in global façade engineering literature for its highly complex geometry and performance-driven envelope design. Designed by COOP HIMMELB(L)AU (Wolf D. Prix & Partner), the tower transforms a conventional high-rise into a sculptural, twisted form defined by a fully glazed, double-curved amorphous façade. The envelope comprises 3,700 curtain wall units, including over 2,500 unique panels within the lower “skirt” geometry, with inclination angles reaching 26 degrees. Advanced geometric rationalization and cold-bent glass technology enabled efficient fabrication, with controlled deflections up to 70 mm. In areas exceeding glass bending limits, triangulated glazing solutions ensured structural integrity while preserving the architectural intent. The façade integrates Metal Yapı’s patented Trickle Vent natural ventilation system, developed through in-house R&D. Delivering 25.8 dB acoustic performance, seamless BMS integration, and night cooling capability, the system enhances energy efficiency without compromising aesthetics. Performance-based engineering addressed high wind and seismic conditions, ensuring long-term durability. This project exemplifies the convergence of iconic architecture, advanced façade engineering, and proprietary innovation, establishing a new reference for high-performance building envelopes.
